Land of ice & sky
One of the best ways to get up close to stunning Alaskan glaciers and colorful, fascinating towns is on a cruise, and this Princess Cruises itinerary ticks all the boxes....
Alaska is a once-in-a-lifetime destination for many travelers, and it often exceeds any expectations visitors may have from photos or guidebooks before arrival. The scope and majesty of Alaska is hard to state — and difficult to comprehend even when there, standing on a ship balcony watching the towering mountains slide smoothly past. Cruising is one of the leading ways visitors enjoy Alaska’s scenery and wildlife, and most make a series of stops in the southeastern waterways known as the Inside Passage. Cruise operators offer a number of excursions at each port; if you want to travel independently or gain more insight into what to do in each port, here are suggestions to help you narrow down the best ways to spend your limited time to soak in all the culture, history, and adventure Alaska has to offer.
KETCHIKAN Ketchikan is often the first (or last) port stop on an Alaskan cruise, as it’s the largest and southernmost community on the Inside Passage. With just over 8,000 residents, it’s both large enough for modern conveniences and attractions — and small enough to give a taste of local life in this part of Alaska. Be sure to stroll along Creek Street to admire the colorful buildings that line the waterway before visiting the Totem Heritage Center to learn about the iconic poles local Native groups use to mark important symbols and figures. To experience a different but equally compelling chapter in Alaska’s history, attend the Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show. Visitors can learn about more modern ways Alaskans have interacted with the land, and the historic importance of the timber industry for the region.
JUNEAU Juneau’s colorful waterfront rivals Ketchikan, and it’s also brimming with budding foodie hotspots. Whether it’s Tracy’s King Crab Shack, where steam wafts over those waiting for their meals, or indulging in a craft cocktail and regionally sourced appetizer at upscale SALT, it’s easy to be satiated within a few steps of the cruise ship dock. Arrange a tour with Juneau Food Tours to sample more. For those with an appetite for adventure, consider booking an excursion to nearby Mendenhall Glacier. From the Visitor Center, peer out at the crystalline blue face of the glacier, or explore the hiking trails which range from under a mile to a few miles in length. On the way to or from the glacier, keep an eye out for bald eagles along the roadside looking for salmon in the waterway that bisects Juneau from Douglas Island.
SKAGWAY History fans will love Skagway, with its rustic storefronts and character reenactments spilling out of doorways. Skagway was once the epicenter of a massive gold rush that brought tens of thousands of prospectors to the region and up the Chilkoot Trail in search of riches. It’s easy to get a sense of what life was like in the late 19th century. Spend time strolling through downtown Skagway to visit the Gold Rush Cemetery, where you can find the inconspicuous grave of Soapy Smith, the town’s most infamous — and devious — resident. After swindling customers in saloons and gambling halls from Denver to Skagway, he met his end in a shootout on Juneau Wharf. Later, board the White Pass & Yukon Railway to ascend to the summit of White Pass (2,865ft).
GLACIER BAY NATIONAL PARK Grab a pair of binoculars and bundle up before stepping outside onto a balcony or upper deck to spend an hour or two surrounded by the Alaskan wilderness. Ships pull in close enough to offer an excellent view of the glaciers, as well as the rugged Alaskan shoreline. Scan for wildlife including eagles, bears, mountain goats, and other seabirds on the rocky and forested mountains that punctuate the glacial landscape. It’s common to spot harbor seals, sea lions and sea otters navigating among the ’bergs in the brilliantly blue water.
SITKA Sitka was the Russian capital of Alaska before it was purchased by the United States in the mid-19th century; it offers a surprising mix of native Alaskan culture, Russian influence, and modern Alaskan pragmatism. Be sure to ascend Baranof Castle State, a state historic site where the paperwork that exchanged more than 586,000sq miles for $7.2m — roughly $0.02 per acre — was signed. The original document is on display in Harrigan Centennial Hall. On the way, stop and admire the Russian Orthodox architecture at St Michael’s Cathedral, where three languages are spoken during weekly mass services: English, Russian, and the local Tlingit language.
When to go: June through August are peak season as the weather is best then. May and September are shoulder season — the weather is less predictable so fewer tours operate at this time. Currency: U.S. dollars Language: English Getting around: On land, you can walk to most attractions. Otherwise transportation will be provided by the cruise company or hotel shuttles.
